The barcode scanner chirped—a sharp, synthetic birdcall in the silence of Row 4—and Margo Ellison flinched, just once, at the sound. It was 6:04 AM. The Mercer County Records Annex did not wake up so much as it persisted, a concrete lung breathing in the dehumidified air of the lower level. The sound bounced off the cinderblock walls and was swallowed by the towering aisles, returning as a ghostly echo. Margo adjusted the nitrile glove on her right hand, smoothing the latex over her knuckle where the material had bunched, trapping a small, uncomfortable bubble of air against her skin. She pressed it flat, feeling the snap of the rubber against the fine hairs on her wrist, a microscopic violence in the quiet.

She checked the manifest on her cart. The clipboard was heavy, a slab of pressed wood with a metal clip that had rusted at the hinge. The paper was warm from her palm, the grid lines printed in a faint, institutional blue that seemed to vibrate against the white of the page. Miller, Homicide, 2004. Evidence log 44-B.

She looked at the shelf. The box was there, standard issue corrugated cardboard, stained with the oily patina of age, the corners soft from years of being slid in and out of metal slots. It sat nestled among its brethren, a dull, beige brick in a wall of beige bricks. She aimed the scanner. The red laser beam speared the barcode, a thin line of violent light in the dim aisle. The computer on her cart chirped confirmation. Match.
